View RecordsDallas is a multi-county city, so the record owner matters more than the word “Dallas” in the query.
A Dallas background check can cross several custodians. Texas DPS is the statewide criminal-history source; Dallas Police handles City of Dallas police records; Dallas County clerks maintain Dallas County court files. Because the City of Dallas extends into five counties, do not assume every Dallas address or event belongs to Dallas County.
| Need | Authority | Geographic scope | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas criminal history | Texas DPS | Statewide Texas repository | Not a city police report |
| Dallas police record | Dallas Police / City of Dallas | City police records | City records are not Dallas County records |
| Dallas County felony case | Dallas County District Clerk | Dallas County felony courts | Valid only when the case is in Dallas County |
| Dallas County misdemeanor case | Dallas County Clerk, Criminal Courts Division | Dallas County misdemeanor courts | Use its Court Portal for available plain copies from 2011 onward; ask the clerk for earlier records or certified copies |
| City municipal citation or Class C case | Dallas Municipal Court Citation & Docket Search | City of Dallas municipal cases | Search by citation/docket number or name and date of birth; this is separate from county felony and misdemeanor files |
The City of Dallas says the city is located within five counties. The City’s open-records page also states that the City provides City records, not records owned by Dallas County or other governmental entities.
For a Dallas County felony case, the Dallas County District Clerk is the custodian. That source should not be used for a case filed in another county.
The City of Dallas spans Collin, Dallas, Denton, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.
Use DPS for state history, DPD for city police records, and the correct county court for court files. The DPS public name-search route covers conviction and deferred-adjudication records; it is not a guarantee of all arrests or every local court file. A name search can match a different person or miss the right one.
DPS’s linked Criminal History Name Search guidance, displayed in its SecureSite context, lists one $1 credit for the initial search, with its automatic expanded searches and viewing multiple matching rap sheets included. SecureSite access is restricted to authorized organizations; public users should follow the Public Website link and confirm that account’s current purchase charges before paying. Do not assume the SecureSite guidance is a verified public-site total.
If you dispute a name-based match to your own record, DPS directs you to request a personal criminal-history review by submitting fingerprints to establish whether DPS holds a matching record.
A Dallas street address can fall outside Dallas County; verify the county tied to the case/property/event.
